Diamond Jubilee March by Gary H. Fagan Mr.
Fagan, one of the Band’s two Assistant Conductors and a member of the its
percussion section, is a noted composer of music for wind bands and
ensembles, particularly at the middle school level. He is currently the band director at J. T.
Henley Middle School in Albemarle County.
Mr. Fagan composed this march in honor of the Municipal Band of
Charlottesville on the occasion of its 75th anniversary. Premiere performance conducted by the
composer, April 15, 1997. |

Fontana Laurel (Conclusion) by Charles J. Torian Mr.
Torian, one of the Band’s two Assistant Conductors and its principal oboist,
is a retired band director currently serving as the Director of Music for
Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Charlottesville. An accomplished composer and arranger, Mr.
Torian composed Fontana Laurel in
honor of James W. Simmons upon the occasion of his retirement as Music
Director for the Charlottesville Municipal Band in 2007. The piece depicts the majestic mountain
scenery surrounding Fontana Lake and dam near Bryson City, NC, one of the
composer’s favorite natural areas.

March Rondo Caprice (Conclusion) by Joseph R. Kornicke Mr.
Kornicke is a member of the Band’s clarinet section. He holds degrees in Music Education and
Musical Composition from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) and
the University of Pennsylvania. He has
written a number of pieces for band and small ensembles. This recording of the premiere performance
of March Rondo Caprice is from the
Band’s April 12, 2006 concert. |

Monticello Triptych by Stephen E. Millard. 1.
At Cuckoo Tavern/The British Are Coming; 2. At Monticello/The Evening Dance;
3. Cross Country/The All-Night Ride Mr.
Millard was formerly the band director at the Jack Jouett Middle School in
Albemarle County. A member of the
Municipal Band’s clarinet section, he currently leads the Charlottesville
Senior Center’s Second Wind Band.
Monticello Triptych was composed in 1995 for the Albemarle County
Middle School Honors Band and is dedicated to James W. Simmons, former Music
Director of the Municipal Band. The
piece depicts Captain Jack Jouett’s historic cross-country ride from Cuckoo
Tavern in Louisa, VA to Monticello on the evening of June 3, 1781 to warn
then-Governor Thomas Jefferson and members of the Virginia Assembly of the
approach of General Tarleton’s British Cavalry. Mr. Millard conducts the piece in this
recording by the Municipal Band made in concert on April 16, 1996. |

The New Paramount March by Paul T. Richards A
member of the Band’s trumpet section and a local authority on circus band music,
Mr. Richards wrote this piece in honor of the recently refurbished Paramount
Theater on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, VA. The piece highlights several of the great
movies that have been shown in the theater over the years and tries to capture
the sparkle and excitement of life in the theater world. The Municipal Band currently presents its
free summer concerts in the Paramount Theater. This recording is from the world premiere
performance given June 3, 2008 in the theater. |

Rise and Shine – a
March
by Fred O’Bryant This
march takes as its theme the well-known bugle call Reveille, weaving the rhythmic and melodic elements of that tune
in and out of the march itself. Mr.
O’Bryant is a member of the Municipal Band’s clarinet section and conducts
the march in a recording from the Band’s April 25, 2006 concert. |

Variants on a Shaped
Note Tune
(Opening Theme) by Jonnie Vinson The
title refers to a traditional early American singing style based on reading a
system of shapes rather than musical notes. The opening theme heard here is
based on the Scottish tune Pisgah
from the shape note songbook, The
Sacred Harp. This recording by the
Municipal Band is from their June 3, 2008 concert. |

Wexford Carol arranged by William Rhodes The Wexford Carol (in Irish: Carúl
Loch Garman) is a traditional Irish Christmas carol originating from
County Wexford and dating from the 12th century. It is heard here in an arrangement for
woodwinds as performed by the Municipal Band on its December 2007 holiday
concert. |
